Flyer Than Most Baby Shower: Frances

The Fresh Prince Of Frances
A 1990's Baby Shower

The first exciting moment after finding out I was pregnant was planning my baby shower. I love a party, and I love a theme party even more. Typically, your family or friends put the baby shower on for you. but I love these kinds of things so much I had to do it myself. First order of business: THEME
Before I found out I was having a baby I did a full leg tattoo paying tribute to my childhood; the 80's and 90's. I decided to carry this idea out when it came to the theme. The Fresh Prince of Frances, a 90's theme shower.Second order of business: INVITATIONS I studied the logo from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and modified to have my name and other baby themed imagery. I had plenty of time on my hands to design everything myself because I stopped working at 6 months, but Photoshop is another easy custom way to make great invites from home. The next step in the shower was planning the DECOR. I had the most fun during this process and my friend Ashley was there every step of the way taking me on crazy missions to find all the quirky items from the 90's. I made a list of things I wanted to keep the focus around and I went from there. Nintendo, Beavis and Butthead, Supersoakers, The Simpsons, Ninja Turtles, Batman, Pogs, etc. Some of these items were extremely hard to find and extremely costly, so I ended up creating lots of these items myself.
We found a vintage Supersoaker for 25 cents at a thrift store, I bought the Simpsons comic books and mod podged some of my favorite clippings over wooden letters that are my sons initials. We also found really inexpensive old VHS tapes from the 90's and incorporated those with the tables. I bought plastic army men and neon lizards to use as cupcake toppers. I took the candy dot tape and some polka dot napkins and made little bowties for the table. I found Spaulding basketball plates from party city along with neon crazy straws. I made my own Nintendo ? Mark box out of paper and placed chocolate gold coins inside. Out of construction paper and sequins I made 90's themed cutouts to place on table such as the Simpsons donut, Nintendo controllers, 1 up and 1 down mushrooms, the batman logo, The Riddler logo, and the perahana plants. I went to the Lego store and bought a bucket of loose Legos and made little Lego hearts for the tables. The next big step was creating the MENU Originally I wanted to food to be 90's theme as well including squeeze it's, lunchables, bagel bites, etc. but it ended up being too costly, so I went with a more grown up version of what the lunchables would contain including crackers, salami, assorted cheeses, strawberries, olives, and yogurt pretzels. I did go to town however when it came to the drinks and candy. I bought vintage Pepsi bottles, Capri suns, and jones soda. The candy stations contained blowpops, fruit roll ups, big league chew, gushers, bubble tape, nerds, butterfingers, pop rocks, etc. The next step was finding a themed OUTFIT to fit my pregnant ass.
Luckily the 90's was back in style and it wasn't very hard to find things to wear. I went to H&M and bought these 90's Zach Morris style pants and a tshirt with Beavis and Butthead on it. I bought a fresh prince style hat from urban outfitters along with some keds and topped it off with doorknocker earrings. My friends had a field day and came in full 90's garb. For the MUSIC I created a 90's playlist that included SPICE GIRLS, BONE THUGS N HARMONY, HANSON, MASE, TLC, SUBLIME, NO DOUBT, AALIYAH, BIGGIE, 2PAC, MARIAH CAREY, COOLIO, etc. The last detail was themed GAMES TO PLAY, every shower needs activities. People partnered up and tried to break balloons with their bodies without using their hands, we had connect four and Jenga completions as well as a bag toss. I set up a prize table with some fun gifts as well as a candy station so that no one would leave empty handed. It was one of the most memorable days of my life and I think everyone had a great time stepping back into their childhood for a day.

Erika and I are never lacking when it comes to creative and frugal party planning.
